Why meditate?
There are many styles or forms of meditation the purpose of meditating is to clear and quiet the mind. As such, the effect of meditating often facilitates one to clear and calm the mind and therefore, often promotes feelings of calm and some report a sense of heightened awareness and
connectivness.
The process of meditation involves attaining a state of thoughtless awareness thus neutralizing the minds stress activities, whilst maintaining
alertness.
During meditation the activity of the brain alters as shown in EEG’s. The brain wave state most commonly noted in various Meditation techniques is the Alpha State. The Alpha wave range is between 13Hz ~ 7Hz. These Alpha waves are associated with relaxation of the nervous system.

Meditation is sometimes classified as a relaxation therapy; however meditation is associated with the relaxation of the
autonomic nervous system.
Meditation may have therapeutic potential, as when the mind unwinds and moves into the Alpha state during meditation, various physiological changes take place, beginning with the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system not only regulates the body’s glands but organs also. There are two distinct, yet complimentary divisions of the autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. The sympathetic system or division becomes dominant in times of stress or emergency situations and initiates profound body changes such as an increase in heart beat, the release of adrenaline, along with stress hormones into the bloodstream. The parasympathetic system is an anabolic system associated with calmer bodily processes. When the brain is in the Alpha state the parasympathetic system becomes more dominant. The effect is a drop in heart rate and blood pressure, a decrease in stress hormones and a slowing of the metabolism. Hence, the longer term health benefits of meditation can include reduced stress and blood pressure.
Meditating and other relaxation therapies reduces sympathetic response by reducing stress hormones into the blood stream and increases parasympathetic activity thus slowing heart rate and improving the flow of blood into the viscera leading it away from the periphery.
